Message from the Council
Dear HKSEMS Members

Dr Kaiser Chiu
Honorary Secretary, HKSEMS
Let’s refresh the activities organized by the council in last 3 months!!
HKSEMS 40th Anniversary Funfair
The funfair, ‘Forty Years of Emergency Medicine: First Aid Challenge’, which was co-organized by HKSEMS and HKCEM and supported by Fire Services Department, Government Flying Service and Hong Kong St. John Ambulance, was held on 21 September 2025 at Stars Atrium, Hollywood Plaza.
The funfair celebrates four decades of progress of HKSEMS while promoting public awareness of essential first aid skills. The event featured a variety of engaging activities, including a first aid competition for secondary school teams, interactive booths, and insightful talks by renowned experts (HKSEMS History and Development of Emergency Medicine in Hong Kong by Dr. Wong Tai Wai and Myanmar rescue mission by Dr. Axel Siu). The audience also enjoyed band show by St John Band and dance show by SDM.
The event helped inspire community engagement in emergency preparedness and health education. An astounding crowd of 1500 participants joined us in the funfair.
Induction Program for Emergency Medicine Doctors
We revamped our induction program to better equip newcomers for the dynamic environment of our Accident & Emergency departments. The newly revamped curriculum, which was launched on 15 July 2025, moves beyond theory to adopt a highly practical approach. All lectures have been comprehensively updated with a clear objective: to impart essential survival skills, ensuring our newcomers are confident, competent, and prepared to excel from their very first shift.
IEEM Preparatory Course 2025
The IEEM Preparatory Course 2025 took place at the TWAH Clinical Training Center on August 11-12, 2025. There were 43 participants on Day 1 (SAQ Day) and 30 on Day 2 (OSCE Day). Four Singaporean examiners were invited to set questions and teach at the course to give participants experience with exam questions and styles from both Hong Kong and Singapore. Participants also gained firsthand experience with the online exam platform, which will be used for the first time in IEEM. This was a valuable opportunity for them to become familiar with the platform before the actual exam. Participants had encouraging feedback. The organizing committee would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to all the local and Singaporean tutors who made the event a success. We also wish all the participants great success in the upcoming exam.
Dinner symposium
A dinner talk was held in NINA Hotel on 12 Aug 2025. Singapore’s experts were invited to share their insights about training model and strategies to prepare the trainees.
POCUS course for Jocky Club Nurses
The HKSEMS conducted an ultrasound course for nurses from the Jockey Club on 25 August 2025. The session provided targeted training to 10 nursing professionals, enhancing their clinical capabilities and fostering stronger ties between our organizations. This initiative reflects our society's active role in advancing medical expertise across the broader healthcare community.
Xi’an Healthcare Exchange Tour
The HKSEMS successfully organized the Xi’an Healthcare Exchange Tour (西安醫療交流考察團) from September 25th to 28th, 2025. The delegation, comprising 30 members from diverse professional fields including medicine, nursing, pharmacy, rehabilitation, and management, was assembled with the aim of fostering professional exchange between Shaanxi and Hong Kong, broadening horizons, and exploring future collaborative opportunities.
The itinerary offered a comprehensive blend of in-depth professional visits and unique cultural experiences. Delegates gained valuable insights from tours of three representative medical institutions: 陝⻄⼈⺠醫院(⻄咸院區)Shaanxi Provincial People's Hospital (Xixian Branch), a major provincial project; ⻄安交通⼤學第⼆附屬醫院 Second Affiliated Hospital of Xi'an Jiaotong University, a top-tier "Class 3A" hospital renowned for its international work in CAR-T cell therapy; and Xi'an International Medical Center Hospital, a massive, modern facility with JCI accreditation and a proton therapy center. Participants particularly valued the opportunity to observe both public and private healthcare systems, providing a multi-faceted understanding of the mainland's medical landscape. The cultural program was equally impactful, featuring VIP access to the 兵⾺俑 Terracotta Army and attendance at large-scale live performances like 長恨歌 "The Song of Everlasting Sorrow" and 1212·⻄安事變"1212 Xi'an Incident."
The tour was highly praised for its professional relevance, excellent organization, and immersive cultural experiences, successfully achieving its preset goals. A key takeaway, unanimously shared by members, was the profound impact of the expanded perspective on both personal and professional development. The delegation concluded that the potential for Qin-Hong Kong medical collaboration is immense, paving the way for continued and deepened future exchanges.
