In 2025, the Hong Kong Society for Emergency Medicine and Surgery (HKSEMS) marks its 40th anniversary, celebrating four decades of its devotion into advancing emergency medicine. Established in 1985, HKSEMS has since shaped Hong Kong’s emergency medicine, provided training for emergency professionals and empowered the general public. To commemorate this milestone, we’re launching a first aid comic book, hosting a funfair, and holding a CPR competition in September 2025.

Comic Book: First Aid for All

Our 40th anniversary comic book aims to make learning first aid engaging for all ages. With interesting illustrations, it covers first aid treatment for common emergency conditions like:

• CPR: Steps to revive someone in cardiac arrest.

• Paediatric poisoning: Correct way to deal with poisoning.

• Seizure Response: Safely assisting during seizures.

• Heatstroke: Recognizing and treating heat emergencies.

This comic transforms medical knowledge into relatable stories and will be suitable for people of all ages. It can help readers become a confident first responder and make Hong Kong safer!

Funfair: 40 Years of Lifesaving

On September 21, 2025, join us at the Hollywood Plaza for a free funfair celebrating HKSEMS’s journey. From the establishment of emergency medicine to modern innovations in CPR, this event showcases emergency medicine’s evolution through:

• Interactive Exhibits: Explore a timeline of milestones, from advancements in emergency medicine to public health campaigns, with modern medical tools.

• Live Demonstrations: Watch ambulance crew perform CPR and defibrillator use, and try hands-on techniques in procedure workshops.

• Costume play: Dress up as an emergency medicine nurse, doctor or ambulance crew at our photo-shooting booth

• Sharing by EM professional their experience in voluntary mission

Open from 10 AM to 6 PM, the funfair is free and people of any age are welcomed. Bring your family to celebrate and learn!

CPR Competition: Youth Saving Lives

In the afternoon of September 21, 2025, our CPR Competition at the funfair will feature teams from 10 secondary schools showcasing CPR skills. Trained by HKSEMS, students will compete in a buzzer round followed by scenario challenge, which will be judged on accuracy and teamwork. This event promotes youth leadership and CPR awareness, vital for Hong Kong’s urban setting where cardiac arrest can occur anytime.

Cheer on the teams, learn CPR at booths, and see how seconds save lives. The winning teams will earn a trophy and certificates will be issued to all participating teams. Early community CPR enhances survival chances—join us to spread this skill!
