Collaboration

Dr Marcus Lo

Editor-in-Chief, HKSEMS

This issue of HKSEMS Newsletter highlights the recent efforts by our members including doctor, nurse and paramedics who continue to strengthen emergency care at home through their international engagement.

In February, Dr. Nora Chan presented Hong Kong's local end-of-life care program to an international audience at the Annual Scientific Meeting of the Society for Emergency Medicine in Singapore. From acute interventions to dignified end-of-life care, our specialty has broadened its scope on the world stage.

Our paramedics and nursing collegaues also shared their jouyrney leading up to their outstanding performance at the Asian EMS Competition, held in Hua Hin, Thailand, that same month. Their reflections offer readers a window into their commitment to professional excellence and the power of interprofessional collaboration.

Few moments better exemplify the impact of collaboration than the joint mission following the Myanmar earthquake on 28 March 2025. Our member doctors and nurse under the Hospital Authority partnered with paramedics and fire services personnel from the Hong Kong Fire Services Department to carry out search and rescue operation, demonstrating how emergency medicine knows no borders.

These stories reflect what Professor Judith Tintinalli reminds us in her recent article: “Emergency Medicine is a specialty caring for all types of patients, in any place, for any problem, right away, and in the right way.
